The $40 meal kit that broke my grocery budget for two weeks
I signed up for one of those meal delivery boxes thinking it'd cut down on takeout, but the intro deal lured me in and then the next week's charge ate up my whole food money for the month. I ended up throwing out half the ingredients because I didn't cook them fast enough, and then I still ordered pizza twice out of frustration. Has anyone else gotten burned trying to meal plan with those subscription boxes, or is there a way to actually make them worth it without going overboard?

The 14 servings of wilted spinach I watched die in my fridge last month taught me that meal kits are really a prepayment for learning your own cooking limits. A little planning with a basic grocery list, sticking to two or three easy recipes, and buying only what you will actually eat by Tuesday saves way more than any box discount. If you treat a subscription like a forced schedule instead of a flexible tool, the math only works for people who already cook every single night without fail.
