Had a whole pork shoulder slip off the hook in the cooler last Tuesday.

Was at the shop in Bellingham, just finished breaking down a 180 pound hog. The hook gave way and the shoulder hit the floor. Grabbed my boning knife, trimmed off the top layer right there. Saved about 85% of it. Anyone have a better hook brand they trust for heavy primals?

What kind of hook were you using? My buddy had a similar thing happen with a beef round, just a total failure at the weld point. He swears by the forged steel ones from that place up in Everett now, says the shank is way thicker. Lost a good ten pounds of meat before he could stop cussing and grab a knife.

Honestly, that sounds like a freak accident more than a real problem. Most hooks are totally fine for normal use, even the cheaper ones. Your buddy just had some really bad luck.

That Everett shop is legit, their forged hooks have a 3/8 inch shank that never lets go.
