Old timer at the shop told me I was wasting my time with electric knives

Wasting my time" seems a little strong, don't you think? I mean, it's a knife, not a life decision. Unless you're trying to slice through a concrete block or something, an electric knife will get the job done for like 90% of people (turkeys, bread, whatever). Old timers have that "back in my day" thing where everything new is a waste, but really, what's the worst that happens? You save two minutes on carving a roast and your life is ruined? Seems like a stretch.

Buddy of mine bought one of those electric knives for Thanksgiving a few years back. Thing was dead out of the box, had to use a regular steak knife to carve the turkey. So that's the real risk, not some fancy debate about craftsmanship. But when it worked? He swore by it for bread, said it made perfect slices every time, no crushed loaf. Most people just want something that cuts without a fight.

Oh man, that reminds me of my buddy Tom who bought one for a Christmas ham... thing caught fire right there on the counter, smoke alarm going off and everything.
