A warning about those new water-based contact cements
For years, I used the old solvent-based stuff for laminate work, no question. About six months ago, I switched to a water-based brand to try and cut down on fumes in my small shop. The first few jobs seemed fine, but last week a big countertop edge started to lift after just two days. The bond just did not hold up to a bit of heat from a coffee maker. I'm going back to the old formula for anything that gets warm or wet. Has anyone found a water-based cement that actually works for kitchen tops?

My shop teacher swore by Titebond Green for years. I've used it on a few outdoor projects that get direct sun and it's held up fine.

That's interesting about the direct sun. How many years would you say those outdoor projects have lasted so far? I'm curious if the glue starts to show any signs of cracking or getting brittle after a few seasons, or if it really stays flexible.

Yeah, that Titebond Green is the only one I've had any luck with either. Tried a different brand on a toolbox drawer liner and it peeled right up in the summer heat. The old smelly stuff just works for certain jobs.
