An old timer told me to sand my plywood edges before assembly and I blew it off for years

I always figured it didn't matter since the edge banding would cover everything anyway. Last year I built a set of kitchen cabinets for a house near Tulsa and the edge banding started peeling on three doors within two weeks. I had to take them all back, sand the edges smooth, and redo the banding. Has anyone else had this happen or was I just using bad adhesive?

Three doors peeling in two weeks sounds like you got some bad adhesive or the temp was off when you applied it. I've skipped sanding plenty of times and never had that kind of trouble. Might be worth checking your glue next time instead of sanding everything.

I switched to a different adhesive brand (went with PL Premium after using Liquid Nails originally) and it made a huge difference on my own kitchen cabinets last year. I also waited until the temp hit the low 70s in my garage before applying anything, which I think helped the bond set better. Sanding is still a good safety net, but yeah, I've had way more success hunting down good glue than trying to prep every single surface perfectly.
