Particle board vs birch ply for shop cabinets, and my 2 year old ones finally proved it
I built a set of shop cabinets about 2 years ago and split them down the middle, cheap particle board on one side and 3/4 birch ply on the other just to see what would hold up. Last week I loaded both sides up with a full set of router bits and clamps, and the particle board side started sagging at the shelf line within a couple days while the ply didn't move at all. The screws in the particle board also stripped out when I tried to tighten one of the hinges, which never happened on the ply side. Cost me about $60 more per box for the ply but it looks like it was the right call. What are you all using for shop boxes these days, still ply or has anyone found a cheaper sheet good that actually holds screws?
