Saw a guy in Portland using dominoes instead of biscuits on a walnut face frame
Stopped by a shop in Portland last week to pick up some rough walnut. The owner was joining face frames with a Festool Domino, 5mm cutters, no biscuits anywhere. He let me try it and the joint lined up dead flat with no sanding. I have been fighting biscuit swell on figured stock for years, so now I am pricing one out. Anyone here run dominoes on painted poplar or does it blow out too easy?
I ran 5mm dominoes in painted poplar cabinet doors all last summer, probably 60 or so frames, and blowout was never the issue. The cutters are sharp and the plunge is slow, so it cuts clean. What got me was the glue. Tightbond III swells the wood a hair and if you don't clamp it flat right away you get a tiny ridge you gotta sand anyhow. Biscuits were way worse for that though, so I still made the switch.
