That one engineer who watched me cut for 20 minutes before saying a word
I was doing a kitchen install last spring over in Oak Park, and this engineer from the GC's office just stood behind me while I trimmed out a lazy Susan corner. He didn't move or say anything, just watched. Then he pointed at a gap I was about to shim and said, 'you know the wall's out a quarter inch over there, right?' I had measured twice and still missed it. Since then I always check the corners with a straightedge before I cut, and it saves me so much headache. Anybody else had a quiet observer catch something you walked right past?

That 'watched me cut for 20 minutes' bit hit close to home. I had a homeowner stand silent while I hung a door, then ask if I'd checked the floor slope, which threw the whole jamb off. These quiet types are always worth listening to, even when they seem creepy at first.
