Finally got a proper cable toner and it was worth every penny

I was tired of guessing which line was which in those big bundles, so I dropped about $150 on a good quality toner and probe set. Used it yesterday on a job in a three story office building with a mess of old Cat5 and coax. Found the right line for a new drop in under two minutes instead of half an hour of trial and error. The time saved on just that one call basically paid for the tool. Anyone have a favorite brand for this kind of gear, or is there something else I should be looking at?

Oh man, that's the best feeling. I grabbed a Fluke toner a few years back and it's the same deal, just saves so much headache. The key is getting one with a good probe that can pick out the tone even right next to other live cables. That's what makes it fast. Cheap ones just buzz on everything and you're back to guessing.

Totally reminds me of tracing speaker wires in my old car.
