Last month I was on a job in Tulsa and the older installer working the same building waved me over to look at his setup. He had a basic tone generator and probe he picked up for like $40, and he was finding the right line through a bundle of 30 in under a minute while my $200 meter kept jumping around. He just shrugged and said the cheap tools force you to learn the wire. I still use his method on every drop now, and I'm not too proud to admit the pricey gear mostly sits in the truck.
