Just found out my old toner probe was the reason I spent an extra hour in a crawl space yesterday

The battery was dying and giving me a weak signal, so I kept tracing the wrong line. I'm out about $80 for the service call time I couldn't bill. What's a good, reliable brand you all use for toners now?

Is it really that big of a deal though? I've used a half-dead toner for weeks... just gotta know the tricks. Tap the battery on a table, wrap the probe in foil, good to go. hannahj49 mentioned the Greenlee, but my old one from the supply house still works fine. Sometimes we just blame the tool when we're having a bad day.

Saw a thread last week where a bunch of techs were swearing by the Greenlee Pro. They said the battery life is solid and the signal stays strong, even in tight spots. Might be worth a look after that crawl space mess lol.

Ugh, I had the total opposite experience with that one... battery died on me in like twenty minutes on a job last month. The signal kept dropping out too, it was a total pain.

Yeah, the "know the tricks" part is what gets you. My buddy tried that foil trick on an old toner in a packed attic (like, insulation up to your knees). He spent an hour chasing a ghost signal, only to find out he was tracing the wrong cable the whole time. He said the worst part was the heat and the feeling he just wasted all that effort. Sometimes a tool that just works is worth it, you know? Not saying you need a new one, but that kind of day can really mess up your rhythm.
