Ran new coax instead of reusing the old line, and the signal issue finally made sense
Had a job in Mesa last month where the customer kept losing internet every time it rained, and I almost just swapped the splitter and called it done. Instead I ran a fresh RG6 from the box and left the old cable hanging in the crawlspace, and the signal level jumped from -12 dBmV to right where it should be. The old line had a slice in the jacket near a sprinkler head that was letting water soak the braid, so every storm it got worse. Took an extra 40 minutes but no callback. How do you all decide when to just replace the drop instead of chasing a problem?
Read a post on a satellite forum a while back where a tech said water getting into the braid is the number one killer he sees and guys waste hours swapping splitters when the drop is already toast. That stuck with me because a splitter is cheap and fast so it's the easy first move, but if the problem only shows up after rain then that's your clue right there. Water doesn't fix itself and it doesn't stay put, it keeps creeping down the line and wrecking more of it. Anything with a jacket slice near sprinklers or a downspout is getting replaced, no testing needed in my book. Forty extra minutes beats a callback every single time.
