Rant: the "always run new cable" rule is costing customers a fortune and I'm done pretending it's gospel
I found out last month that the average full rewire on a 3 bed house runs somewhere between $2,000 and $6,000 depending on how much drywall you gotta open, and I saw that number in a trade forum thread where a guy in Phoenix was bragging about upselling new runs on every single job. That bugged me because half the homes I walk into already have good RG6 stapled in the walls that tests clean end to end. Everyone on the crew I work with says you always pull fresh cable because old stuff is unreliable, but I've tested runs from the early 2000s that hit the same signal numbers as the spool in my van. There's also the whole deal of drilling through fire blocks and cutting access holes in a finished ceiling for no real reason when the existing line is fine. I get it if the cable is chewed up by rats or full of splitters daisy chained from the 90s, those are real problems. But charging a family $2,800 to replace something that reads 0 dBmv flat is just taking their money. Am I wrong here, or does anyone else test first before quoting a full rewire?
