Warning: That 'quick attic check' customer almost got me electrocuted last month
Honestly, I still get jittery thinking about this job over in Clackamas. Lady calls me out for a simple line drop, says the attic is 'totally open and easy to get to.' I pop the hatch and see about 8 inches of blown insulation covering everything, no walking boards, and the old romex runs are buried under there with zero junction boxes. She stood at the ladder and kept saying 'it's just a small space, you'll be fine' while I was stepping on joists and sweaty. I finally dropped my light down and saw a chewed up wire, like a mouse had gotten to it and half the jacket was gone. I noped right back down and told her I wouldn't go back up until an electrician tagged everything. She got huffy and threatened to call my boss, but I'd rather lose one job than end up as a cautionary tale. Has anyone else walked away from a crawl space or attic that looked fine from the opening but was pure hazard once you got in there?

Man, attics like that are the worst because everything looks fine until you're already three joists in and can't turn around. I had one in Gresham where the guy swore the decking was solid and I put my foot right through the drywall ceiling of his kitchen below. You did the right thing walking, no paycheck is worth getting fried over some lady's huffing.
