PSA: The $55 JIS screwdriver set that finally stopped me from stripping lens screws
I have been fixing cameras out of my basement shop in Boise for about four years now and for the first three of those years I was fighting every single screw on every single lens. I was using a cheap Phillips set from the hardware store, maybe $12, and I kept chewing up the heads on filter rings and mount screws. I blamed the screws, I blamed the cameras, I blamed the guy who sold me the lens. Six months ago a retired repair guy at a swap meet handed me his JIS set and told me to try it on a stuck Canon FD mount. The screws came out like butter, no slipping, no stripping. I went home and ordered my own Japanese Industrial Standard set for $55 and I have not chewed a single screw since. The whole thing bugs me because I wasted three years and probably a dozen good bodies on a tool problem I did not know I had. So what is the one tool you held out on way too long before finally buying? I want to know what else I am missing.
Three years and a dozen bodies gone because of a twelve dollar screwdriver set? That is wild, and it makes me wonder how many other people are out there blaming their gear when the tool is the real problem. The swap meet guy basically saved your whole shop for free, which is a good reminder that the right tool is sometimes just sitting in someone else's junk box.
