Rant: found a tiny screw on my bench at 11pm and spent 2 hours deciding if it came from a customer's Nikon
Last Tuesday I finished a shutter swap on an old FM2 around 11pm and spotted one tiny black screw sitting right next to my tweezers. I sat there for a good 10 minutes trying to figure out if I dropped it from the camera or if it fell out of my parts tray, and the whole time my stomach was doing flips. I ended up picking option A, tear the camera back open to check every screw hole, and of course they were all full. Turned out the screw came from a junk drawer I bumped earlier that night, so I did all that work for nothing. Does anyone else keep a scrap screw jar nearby just to stop this kind of late night panic?
The part about tearing the camera back open and finding every screw hole full is what gets me. So the real question is, when did you actually stop and think "this screw came from the junk drawer"? Was it after the second teardown, or did it hit you halfway through the first one and you just ignored it? I've done the same thing with a spring that flew off a bench and spent 45 minutes on hands and knees with a flashlight, only to find it was from a pen that broke two days earlier. At some point you have to ask yourself why the brain always jumps to the worst case first instead of the boring answer. Curious if you had a moment where you knew but kept going anyway.
