Spent 3 months chasing a shutter issue that was actually my light seal foam
Kept re-cleaning the shutter blades on a customers Canon AE-1 because frames kept coming back foggy on the left side, must have torn it down 5 times. Finally a guy at the shop in Tucson asked if I'd checked the mirror bumper foam, and sure enough it had turned to tar and was flaking onto the film. Anyone else got a go-to checklist before they start pulling shutters apart?
That "torn it down 5 times" line hit me hard, been there way too many times. I spent a whole weekend on an OM-1 once chasing light leaks that turned out to be the foam around the back door hinge, not the shutter at all. Every time I opened it up the seals looked "fine" to me because I didn't know what rotten foam was supposed to look like. Now the first thing I do is poke every piece of foam with a toothpick before I even touch the shutter. If it crumbles or sticks, that's your problem right there. Saves a lot of cussing and tiny screws lost on the floor.
