TIL a stripped focus ring screw on a Nikon FM2 can eat an entire Tuesday if you rush the extractor
Spent 4 hours in my Boise shop last Tuesday after snapping a 0.9mm screw head flush with the barrel on a customer's FM2, so I soaked it in penetrating oil overnight, hit it with a left hand drill bit at 800 rpm, and backed it out clean the next morning, and now I'm wondering if anyone here keeps a spare tap set just for these old brass screws or if I'm the only one who learned this the hard way?
Oh man, been there. Snapped a 1.2mm on a customer's FE2 last month and spent way too long cussing at it. Now I keep a little jar of JIS bits and a set of tiny left hand drills just for these jobs. Brass screws on old Nikons are soft as butter, one wrong turn and you're drilling. I also started keeping spare tap sets for M1.4 and M1.7 threads because finding them local is a joke.
