TIL I had the shutter tension screw backwards on every leaf shutter I touched for 3 years
I was working on a Synchro-Compur out of a Rolleiflex last month and the 1/500 speed kept dragging no matter how many times I cleaned the blades. A guy named Dale who runs a shop over in Akron asked me to bring it by, and he watched me for maybe two minutes before he said, you're tensioning it against the spring travel, not with it. I had been setting that screw the same way since I learned on a Yashica 124 back in 2022, just snugging it down until the slow speeds sounded right and calling it good. Turns out I was fighting the mainspring on every single shutter, which is why my 1/250 and 1/500 were always mushy and why I kept blaming worn blades. He showed me on his bench with a scrap shutter, backed the screw off a quarter turn, and the speeds snapped right into place on his tester. I must have done that wrong on 40 or 50 shutters by now and half of them probably left my bench running slow. Anyone else learn shutter tension the wrong way and have to unlearn it?
