Can we talk about the cheap carabiner that failed on my bear bag at Philmont?
Two summers ago I was 3 days into a trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and hung my food bag with a no-name carabiner I got in a 6 pack for $9. Around 2am I heard a clang and something dragging, and the gate had bent open under maybe 30 pounds of food and rope tension. I lost a whole bag of trail mix and a summer sausage to whatever got it, and I spent the rest of the trek paranoid. Now I only use carabiners rated for climbing, even for hanging stuff, because the gate strength matters way more than the price tag. Has anyone else had a cheap one bend on them, or am I just unlucky?
