Finally ditched my fancy sleeping pad for a foam one

I was a diehard inflatable pad guy for years, spending over $200 on one that leaked after two seasons. Then I borrowed a buddy's closed-cell foam pad on a trip to Red River Gorge last month. It was way more comfortable than I expected, plus I slept through the night without waking up to adjust the air. Has anyone else gone back to the old school foam after trying the fancy stuff?

Red River Gorge is actually a pretty rocky campsite, I got a leak on my second trip there too lol. But I gotta say closed cell foam doesn't insulate as well as inflatables when the ground gets real cold. I switched back to an inflatable for winter trips after my foam pad let the cold seep through on a 20 degree night in the Smokies. Still keep the foam one for summer though, it's way less hassle and you don't worry about punctures. Just depends on the temps you're dealing with really.

Same thing happened to me. Bought a $180 inflatable pad that got a slow leak on the third trip out. Tried patching it twice and gave up. Picked up a basic closed cell foam pad for twenty bucks and it's been solid ever since. Last trip to the Smokies I slept on gravel and woke up feeling fine. The trade off is pack size but honestly I just strap it to the outside of my bag now. Not going back to inflatables anytime soon.

Man it's crazy how often the "upgrade" just means more complicated problems.
