Just found out my camp stove fuel canister has a hidden expiry date

I was packing for a trip last weekend to Shenandoah and noticed a tiny stamp on my isobutane canister that said it expired 2 years ago. Looked it up online and apparently the seals degrade over time, so it's not just a suggestion. Has anyone else run into a dud canister from old stock?

Wait, they actually put expiration dates on those? I've been using the same canisters from my garage sale haul for years. Guess I got lucky nothing blew up on me yet.

Yeah I had one of those old Coleman canisters from a camping trip back in 2019 that I forgot about in my garage. Took it out last spring and the stove barely put out a flame, just sputtered and died after a few minutes. The seal on the valve was all crusty and cracked when I looked close. Now I always check the stamp before buying, anything past 3 years old I just leave on the shelf. Also if you get a canister that feels super light or rattles weird when you shake it, that's another sign the seals are shot. Better to just grab a fresh one than deal with no heat halfway through cooking dinner.

Laughing at @xenam84 rolling the dice on garage sale canisters... that's basically playing propane roulette right there lol. I guess if you want a free fireworks show with your camping trip, go for it.
