My buddy used duct tape to fix a tent pole in Yosemite and it held for three whole days of wind.

Michael over there with his three days in Yosemite, but I've seen duct tape turn into a sticky gooey mess in the rain after just a few hours. A proper pole sleeve or a spare section of tent pole weighs next to nothing and won't leave you scrambling when the tape gives out. So yeah, I get the convenience but that's a gamble I'm not taking on a multi-day trip.
