My Coleman stove flooded my breakfast and it was oddly a good thing

Last Saturday at Lost Maples State Park, my trusty old two burner started sputtering and then just dumped fuel all over my eggs. The regulator was shot after maybe 8 years of use, and I had to eat cold granola while my buddy cooked bacon on his little single burner. But tearing it apart on the picnic table taught me exactly how the whole valve system works, and swapping in a $15 generic regulator from a shop in Kerrville fixed it perfectly. Has anyone else had a basic part fail on an older stove and find that fixing it yourself beats just replacing the whole thing?

You ever tear into something and suddenly realize it's not as mysterious as the internet makes it seem? Same thing happened with my old single burner, the valve knob froze up solid on a trip to Big Bend. I took it apart on the tailgate, found a busted O-ring the size of a pencil eraser, and McMaster-Carr had a pack of ten for like four bucks. That was three years ago and it still lights first try, so yeah, fixing it yourself definitely beats dropping cash on a whole new unit. Plus now I know exactly what to look at if it acts up again.
