Rant: A guy at a Cabela's in Denver told me my tent stakes were pointless and switched me to snow pegs for car camping

I always used cheap aluminum spikes until he showed me how his stakes bent in wind at a site outside Boulder, so now I use 10-inch MSR Groundhogs even in summer, has anyone else had a random stranger change their whole setup?

I read somewhere that a guy in Montana used the same cheap stakes for years until a big windstorm blew his tent halfway across a field with him still inside it. He switched to the big MSR ones after that and swore by them. My own setup changed after a night at a site near Moab where my stakes pulled out of the sand at 3 AM. Now I carry a mix of Groundhogs for hard ground and the wide plastic ones for loose stuff. Funny how one stranger's bad experience can save you the trouble.

That Moab sand is brutal, had the same thing happen to me out there a few years back.
