Rant: I swore off alcohol stoves after a windy night at Lake Pleasant, then a stranger changed my mind
Two winters back I was camping at Lake Pleasant outside Phoenix and my alcohol stove took four tries to light in the wind. I dumped it in disgust, went back to my canister stove, and bad mouthed alcohol stoves to anyone who would listen for a year. Then in March a guy at the campsite next to mine in Sedona cooked a full pot of chili on a homemade cat food can stove while the wind was whipping through camp. He showed me how to make a proper windscreen from heavy foil, about $3 of material, and it held steady the whole time. I felt pretty dumb standing there with my $60 canister setup. The thing that got me was the weight, his whole cook kit was under 3 ounces and mine is 11. I've been testing a foil windscreen setup on my own stove now and it lights on the first match even in gusts. Anyone got a windscreen pattern they like better than the basic folding foil?
