The $12 tarp stake I laughed at, now I own 8 of them
I bought a single orange spiral ground stake at an REI sale in Denver last spring mostly to prove a point to my friend who swore by them, and yeah, it survived a 40 mph wind gust that ripped out my regular steel stakes like they were toothpicks. I went back and grabbed seven more the next week, and now I won't camp without them. Anyone else been humbled by a piece of gear they mocked at first?

Those orange spirals hold way better in loose dirt than anything straight. Trick is to twist them all the way in until the top loop touches the ground, not just halfway. Once they're seated, you can practically pull your tent over with them.
