The $12 tarp trick that saved my tent floor in the Smokies

I read a comment from a ranger about how most tent damage comes from below, not rain. Picked up a cheap painter's tarp from Home Depot, cut it to fit my footprint plus 4 inches, and it stopped a sharp rock from poking through on my last trip to Cades Cove. Anyone else use a $12 tarp instead of a $60 footprint?
