Thought a $12 foam pad was a joke until I slept on rocks in Moab
Everybody in my hiking group swears you need a $150 inflatable pad or you'll freeze, but my cheap closed cell foam one held up fine on a 4 night trip in Moab back in April. Sure it's bulky strapped to the pack, but it never popped and I slept fine on frozen ground at 28 degrees. Is the fancy inflatable really worth 10x the price, or are we all just buying the hype?
Oh man I read a backpacking forum thread where a bunch of old timers said the same thing, foam pads just work and inflatables are mostly hype for car campers. My cousin did the whole AT with a $15 foam pad and never had issues. The only downside people kept bringing up was comfort on your side, but if you sleep on your back you're golden.
