TIL a cheap tarp at Lake Tahoe saved my tent floor from a washout

I was camped near Emerald Bay last June and a sudden storm turned my site into a muddy river. My $15 tarp with sandbags on the edges kept everything dry, but my fancy footprint got soaked anyway. Anyone else ditch the expensive ground cloth for a plain tarp?

Did you actually weigh them both before buying or just grab the cheapest option?

I weighed them but went with the tarp because it packs smaller and I already had one.
