Took me 3 hours to figure out why my camp stove kept dying in the wind, and the fix was $4
Went camping at Lake Wenatchee a couple weekends ago and my stove kept flaming out every time a gust came through the site. I messed with the fuel mix, bled the line twice, even swapped canisters thinking I got a bad batch. Three hours of fiddling in the cold before a guy two sites over walked by and pointed out I was using a windscreen meant for a different stove, so the gap was choking the air intake instead of blocking wind. Bought a $4 folding screen at a hardware store on the drive home and it worked first try. Now I'm wondering if half the gear complaints on here are really just mismatched accessories, or if cheap screens are actually worse than no screen at all. What's your setup for windy spots?
Man, three hours in the cold fighting that thing sounds rough, especially when the answer turns out to be a four dollar piece of metal. I had the same kind of deal at Baker Lake last fall, kept blaming my old canister stove for sputtering until my buddy noticed my screen was sitting too close and cooking the whole burner. The gap matters way more than people give it credit for. Cheap screens aren't worse than nothing, they're just picky about fit, and a bad fit is worse than going bare. Feels good when the cheap fix is the right one though.
