Tried a $25 solar lantern from Harbor Freight on a 3-day trip, and it completely died on night two.

Yeah, I had the same thing happen with one of those. It held a charge for maybe four hours of dim light, then just gave up. I mean, for the price I guess I shouldn't be shocked, but it was still pretty disappointing.

Sounds like they're built to disappoint on purpose.

Actually, four hours of dim light isn't that bad for a cheap light. Mine only lasted about an hour on the low setting before it got super weak. The real problem is when they won't take a charge at all after a few weeks.
