Update: I finally gave up on my old canvas tent after a rainy night in the Smokies
I used to think heavy canvas was the only way to go for durability, but that trip last October changed my mind (the thing soaked through and weighed a ton when wet). I switched to a modern nylon shelter with a higher hydrostatic head rating, and it's been bone dry through two spring storms. Anyone else make the switch from old-school heavy materials to newer tech for the weight and weatherproofing?

Oh man, same. I was a total canvas loyalist until a soggy week in Maine. That wet weight is no joke. My new silnylon tarp is half the weight and hasn't leaked once.

Wait, you carried a wet canvas tarp in Maine? That sounds like a nightmare.

Was that the same storm that flooded parts of Acadia last fall? I read a trail report where someone's canvas tarp soaked up so much water it actually bent their tent poles.
