Used to pack my sleeping bag loose in the trunk, now it lives in a compression sack and I am never going back
For about eight years I just threw my bag in the trunk loose and called it good. Then two summers ago I drove up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire for a three night trip and got rained on the whole second day. That bag soaked up water like a sponge and weighed a ton by the time I hiked back out. It never really dried either, so night three I was cold and miserable in a damp bag. A guy at the campground in Twin Mountain saw me wringing it out and asked why I wasn't using a trash compactor bag as a liner. Cost me two dollars at the hardware store in town. Now the bag goes in the liner, gets squeezed down, and goes in a compression sack, and my pack is smaller and everything stays dry. I know this is basic stuff to a lot of you, but has anyone else figured out a cheap liner that holds up better than the compactor bags do?
