Found out my city's average salary for my job is way off from what I thought

I was looking at a report from the local business journal last week and saw the average marketing manager salary here in Austin is $85,000. I make $72,000 with five years of experience and thought I was doing okay. It made me check a few other sites like Glassdoor and the numbers were pretty close. Now I'm not sure if I should ask for a raise or just start looking around. Has anyone else found a big gap like this and what did you do about it?

That gap is rough, maybe it's time to check your options.

Yeah that gap is big. I'd start looking around first.

Hold up, those averages can be super misleading though. They lump together people at tiny startups and huge tech companies, so the number gets skewed way high. Your pay might be totally normal for your specific company size and what they do. Plus, cost of living and benefits matter a ton, and those sites never show that full picture. Jumping ship over a number you saw online could be a big mistake if you actually like your job.
