Had a buddy in accounting tell me 'your resume is just a receipt for your skills' and it hit different for some reason

My buddy said your resume just proves you can do what you claim, but everything after that is just relationship building in interviews so do you guys think resumes are more about proof or about showing personality?

Is a resume really the best place to show personality though? I get where your buddy is coming from but I think a resume is mostly proof. It's a list of what you've done and where you've been. You show your personality when you walk in the door and shake someone's hand. That's where the relationship building starts. The resume just gets you through the door.

A career coach I heard on the radio said almost the same thing. They argued that a resume is just a ticket to the game, not the game itself. You still have to show up and play well. The personality part matters a whole lot once you're in the room. But if your resume is nothing but boring bullet points, some people won't even bother calling you in. A little bit of who you are can help you stand out from the stack, even if it's just a small sentence about why you like the work. So maybe it's not all or nothing.

Oh for crying out loud, so now my resume is a receipt AND a personality test? What's next, I have to include my star sign and favorite pizza topping to get a callback? I guess I'll just write "I laugh at my own jokes and I'm really good at faking enthusiasm during team meetings" right under my job history. Perfect, that'll really seal the deal with HR. But seriously, if my resume needs to both prove I can do the work AND show I'm a fun person, I'm just gonna staple a selfie to it and call it a day.
