Hot take: my uncle in Toledo said never take the first offer, and my $6k raise says he was onto something
When I got my offer last March I called him before signing, pushed back once, and the recruiter came back with $6,000 more plus a start date two weeks later, so what's the move when the first number already feels decent?
Something people forget is the first offer usually has a range behind it, so even a decent number probably has room. Ask what the range for the role is before you name anything, then let them talk first. Worst case you learn where you already sit in it.
