I used to think networking was pointless until a stranger at a Detroit conference last week told me 'your next job is probably sitting two seats over' and I actually introduced myself.

Has anyone else had a random chat at an event lead to a real opportunity?

Saw a study that said weak ties are way more likely to land you a job than close friends.

Sounds like pure luck to me.

Colegarcia said it sounds like pure luck, but I see it as making your own luck. I got my current gig because I asked a guy about his band t-shirt at a coffee break. That chat turned into a freelance project that lasted a year. You have to be the one to start talking.

I read that most jobs come from weak ties like that.
