My fear of extra responsibility cost me a key opportunity
I always heard you should protect your time and avoid too much stress. So when offered a leadership role, I said no. Big mistake, because now I'm watching my colleagues advance while I'm still here.

Miss that one chance and it can start a pattern. Seen it happen. You turn down a stretch assignment because it feels safer, then you miss the training budget that comes with it. Next time a tough project pops up, they skip you because you lack the recent experience. It keeps you stuck. That initial safe choice can lock you into staying put while everyone else moves up.

Hold on, is it really that cut and dry? Sometimes saying no to a stretch assignment just means you have too much on your plate already. Good bosses will understand if you explain your situation clearly. Missing one chance doesn't doom you to being stuck forever. People find new opportunities and catch up all the time. It feels like you're overstating how much one choice can change your whole path.

I was offered a chance to lead a new menu rollout last year. It seemed way over my head, but I said yes anyway. I asked the head chef for weekly check-ins to stay on track. That move got me noticed and led to more responsibilities later.
