My old boss in Phoenix told me to never take a counteroffer, but staying put after getting one was the best move I ever made.

Actually, they gave the offer because I had another one.

That Harvard Business Review article said this happens a lot.

Ha, tell me about it. I once got a counteroffer so good I thought it was a prank, like someone was punking me. Turns out they just really didn't want to train my replacement on how to work the ancient inventory system, which I'm pretty sure was held together with duct tape and hope. So yeah, I took it and I'm still here three years later, probably because I'm too lazy to update my resume.

Glad it worked out for you. That advice gets repeated so much it feels like a rule. Sometimes the situation is just different. They gave you the offer because they actually value you, and you wanted to stay. Makes total sense. Good on you for knowing what was right for your own job.
