Rant: I used to think job hopping every year was the only way to get a raise.
Honestly, I stayed at my last place for three years and got two promotions, which bumped my pay more than switching ever did. The change came after my manager in Austin sat me down and laid out a real growth plan. Anyone else find that staying put actually worked out better?

Yeah but danielowens is right, you gotta check their track record first.

Stopped falling for that stuff after I got burned by a startup that promised me a senior title in 6 months. Took the job, worked like crazy, and when the time came they conveniently forgot the conversation ever happened. Now I just ask for concrete examples of past loyalty or promotions whenever someone starts talking about future rewards. If they waffle or pivot, I know it's all talk and I walk.

That's a huge gamble though. Most places just string you along with empty promises.

Kai's right about it being a gamble. I see this everywhere now, not just jobs. Companies, brands, even friends make big promises about future loyalty to get what they want today. You have to judge if their past actions back up the talk.
