Rant: my old manager in Tucson said to job hop every 2 years, and it burned me after the third jump
Six years back I was working tech support at a call center in Tucson making $38,000, and my manager there, a guy named Dale, pulled me aside and said the only way to get a real raise was to leave every couple of years instead of waiting on the company. I took that to heart and jumped ship three times in five years, chasing an extra $6,000 to $9,000 each move. The money was real, I won't lie, but by that third jump I was the new guy again at 34, sitting in training with a bunch of 23 year olds learning a scheduling tool I'd already learned twice at other places. My 401k match kept resetting because none of the new jobs vested until year three, so I basically gave that free money back three times. When the last company did layoffs in early 2023, I had the least tenure on my team and got cut first, while people who'd stayed put for eight years kept their jobs. Dale meant well and I think his advice worked great in 2010, but the rules changed and he never updated them. Curious if anyone here has stayed at one place a long time and felt like that was the smarter play.
