Rant: Wasted $400 on a career coaching course that was just common sense

I signed up for a 6 week career coaching program last spring because I felt stuck at my kitchen job. The coach kept telling me to 'update my resume' and 'network more' like I couldn't figure that out on my own. I paid $400 total and by week 3 I realized she was just reading from a script. The only useful thing she said was to apply to 5 jobs a day, which I could have heard for free on YouTube. I feel like an idiot for not checking reviews first. Has anyone else fallen for one of these expensive coaching programs?

Apply to 5 jobs a day" - you're saying that's common sense, but how many people actually do it? Most people who feel stuck in their career aren't doing that. They're sitting around hoping something changes. A coach telling you to do the obvious stuff is like a personal trainer telling you to eat less and move more. It's obvious but most people ignore it until someone charges them money to say it. The $400 probably made you actually listen and follow through, which is worth something.

Exactly. Sometimes paying somebody is just the kick in the pants you need to actually do the stuff you already know you should be doing. The money makes it feel real instead of just another thing you'll get to "someday.

Man that's exactly what I needed to hear. I've been sitting on this career change idea for two years now, just telling myself I'd get around to it. Finally shelled out for a session with someone and all they basically said was "update your portfolio and network more." Stuff I already knew, but somehow hearing it from someone I paid made it click. Funny how the brain works like that, isn't it?
