Serious question, does anyone else skip the job boards and just walk into shops with a resume?
Everyone online says applying through company websites is the only way to get hired, but that has not been my experience at all. For about two years I filled out online forms every night, maybe 60 applications, and I got two callbacks and zero interviews. Six months ago I started printing ten copies of my resume and walking into small shops and offices around Denver on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, dressed normal, asking if the manager had five minutes. Out of 14 walk ins I got 5 real conversations and 2 job offers, one of which is the job I have now. I think the reason is simple, the person doing the hiring gets tired of staring at a screen and a real face cuts through all the noise. It also shows you actually want that shop and not just any paycheck. People say this is outdated and annoying, but the managers I talked to said they liked it, so I am not going back to the forms. Has anyone else had luck with in person visits, or did it blow up in your face somewhere?
