The promotion that never comes: is waiting it out ever worth it?

Friends tell me to be patient, but I feel stuck. Should I push harder or keep waiting for it to happen?

Actually, what if the real issue is who knows about your work? I got stuck for years until I realized my boss's boss had no idea what I did. Started finding small ways to show my work to the people who actually make promotion choices, like offering help on their projects. The move finally came from that group, not from my direct manager.
