A $12 laser level from a pawn shop in El Paso beat my $200 one on a cabinet job
My 6 foot level kept telling me a run of upper cabinets was dead on, but the doors wouldn't close right at the top. I grabbed a beat up $12 laser level at a pawn shop on Dyer Street just to have a second opinion, and it showed the wall was out by almost half an inch over 8 feet. Turned out my good level had a twist in the frame I never would have caught by eye. Anyone else keep a cheap second tool around just to fact check the expensive one?
Used to figure a good tool is a good tool and that was that. Paid good money, treated it right, why would I ever need to double check it. Then a guy I worked with dropped a cheap plastic square on my bench one day and showed me my framing square was off by a hair. Took me a while to come around on it. Now I keep a beat up tape and a little laser in the truck just to keep the nice stuff honest. Turns out the tools you trust the most are the ones you stop looking at.
