A client in Boise said my built-in bookcase looked like it grew there

I was installing a floor to ceiling unit in a 1920s craftsman, and the homeowner just stood there for a minute after I finished. She said, 'It looks like it grew there, not like you built it.' That was the best review I've ever gotten. What's the nicest thing a customer has ever said about your work?

That's the dream, right? When they forget you're the one who put it there. Best I ever got was a guy staring at a deck I built and saying, "Well, it's not going anywhere." Guess that's the Idaho version of high praise. Makes you wonder if they think we just plant furniture seeds and water them.

Actually that's the best kind of praise you can get. Means it fits in so well it looks like it was always there. If a deck looks like it grew out of the ground, you did your job right. That guy saying it's not going anywhere meant he trusted your work completely. He wasn't looking at a new deck, he was looking at part of his house.

My neighbor still thinks his fence came with the house.
