A guy at the lumber yard in Spokane grabbed my board and tapped it twice, and now I can't stop doing it
Was picking through a stack of 2x4s last Tuesday and this older fella next to me picked one up, tapped the end on the concrete twice, and set it back down. I asked what that was about and he told me a dull thud means a knot or a check hiding inside, and a sharp ring means solid wood. Tried it on the next ten boards I pulled and caught two that looked clean on the face but sounded dead as a doornail. Maybe I'm late to this, but it changed how I pull stock. Any of you do this, or is there a better trick for spotting bad boards before they hit the saw?
