A homeowner's roof comment made me rethink my nail pattern
Last spring I was doing a deck rebuild over in Mapleton and the owner watched me framing for a bit. They asked why I was spacing nails so far apart on the joist hangers, said it looked like I was just trying to save a few cents. I got defensive at first, but then I pulled the manufacturer's spec sheet and sure enough, I was using half the recommended nails on the sides. I changed my pattern that same day and now I carry a printout in my truck for every hanger I use. It added maybe 20 minutes per job, but that's nothing compared to a failing ledger board. Has anyone else had a customer point out something that made you double check the code book?
