Crown molding corners still giving me fits after 12 years

I was on a job last week in Raleigh redoing a dining room that some other crew botched. Their coped joints had gaps you could drop a nickel through, and they just caulked over it like nobody would notice. If you're gonna cut crown flat on a miter saw, at least take the time to fine tune the spring angle, stop relying on that cheap digital gauge that lies to you. Am I the only one who blocks up the crown and cuts it vertically, or is everybody else still fighting the saggy corners too?

Cheap digital gauge that lies to you" ha, that thing is about as trustworthy as my ex husband's promises. Twelve years in and you're still getting nickel gaps? That's not crown molding, that's a coin slot with extra steps. I started blocking up and cutting vertical about five years back and never looked back, but I still keep a tube of caulk in the truck for the clients who insist on staring at the corners like they're art. Honestly, if the caulk is thick enough, you can't even tell the difference until you run your finger over it, and by then I'm already gone.
